Named after a group of anonymous individuals of whom Shakespeare's Othello chose to hang out with over a night of sex with his wife, South London's Captains of the Citadel deliver a twisted sort of faux-pop, with edgings of delta blues and punk; the sound of a band staggering their way back to London's red light district after sharing a prison cell with The Fratellis, The Pixies and John Lee Hooker in some offshore Caribbean tax haven.
Captain Ad's lyrics put an investive spin on the quirks and nuances of British romantic life with wry humour and a delicate charm - either by exploring the suppressed passion that bubbles under the surface of middle-England's leafy commuter-town suburban nightmare, or satirically exposing London's Primrose Hill Gang and the twenty-first century obsession with z-list culture.. |

"Charming, aimless, and not without a sense of wonder - with songs that spiritedly crawl from one chord change to another with a few gallant spurts of messy guitars and crashing drums..."

"The church of modern day indie is a broad one, where it's perfectly acceptable for Korg toting flouro wastrels to unleash bleep-gasmic post rave, before the DJ next spins another one by a bunch of lairy bomber jacketed proles shouting about birds, beer and bother.
Captains of The Citadel - South Londoners Adam Ross Hunt, Derek Williamson, Timothy Hunt and Thomas Herbert - have chosen a path less well trodden, fusing elements of grunge with that great, vitriolic stab of punk energy which thankfully the Americans never quite got..."

"How to Dismantle Yourself [EP] is basically a collection of great drinking songs that make you want to rock out, while you’re at the darkest dive bar in town. The band’s latest track “Lacy Bra Song”, is without a doubt their best work yet, with its sexy keyboards, jazzy bass and wicked guitar riffs. A few other notable tracks are radio friendly “The Party’s Always the Same”, the grungy feel of “Water” and “How to Dismantle Yourself” with its wicked chord progression and peppy vocals..."

"...whilst the quiet-loud songwriting chassis is as comfortably familiar as a weekend sweatshirt, the four piece are less than content to be post-emo wannabes. This is music to stare up into the night sky and scream along to, especially on the anthemic Tara, which bristles with a better-loud chorus and good old fashioned guitars piled on guitars. Hunt's words are frequently torn between life affirmation and pathos-soaked world-watching..."

"The overall tone of the album is fairly dark, but the swing-like "Heaven FM" works so well that it's disconcerting when the Captains slip into something like the brooding "I Live With Ghosts" - not in a bad way, but in the way that eating a bag of Revels makes for a constantly disconcerting experience. To tediously extend the metaphor this album IS a bag of Revels with all the coffee ones removed - a good thing..."

"Captains of the Citadel is yet another one of the many new and exciting bands we’ve found this year hailing from Indie-rock music’s new hotspot, London. The dazzling foursome is very reminiscent of 90’s grunge rock music, collecting many of the spunky elements we came to love and adore when played by bands like Collective Soul, Pearl Jam and Incubus.
